Paul LaFleche
Paul LaFleche was appointed Deputy Minister of the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing and the Department of Seniors and Long-term Care in August 2021.
Biography
Paul is an experienced senior executive and strategic advisor in government, academia and economic development. He practiced as a geoscientist in the university, government and private sectors as a professor, research scientist and consultant.
Since joining the Government of Nova Scotia as the Secretary to the Executive Council in 2003, Paul has also served as Chair, Council of Deputy Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety, and as Co-Chair, Council of Deputy Ministers Infrastructure and Chair of the Council of Deputy Ministers of Public Works. Before joining government, he served as President of the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Nova Scotia.
Paul has a Bachelor of Science from Concordia University, a Master of Public Administration from Carleton University, and a master and doctorate degree from McGill University.

Deputy Minister, Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing
The Deputy Minister of the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing leads the department in helping municipalities build strong communities and improve fire safety and emergency preparedness. The deputy minister is also responsible for helping increase access to safe, suitable and affordable housing.
Responsibilities include:
- overseeing day-to-day operations of the department
- providing advice and recommendations to the minister on departmental matters
- representing the department and Government of Nova Scotia at municipal, provincial and national levels
Deputy Minister, Department of Seniors and Long-term Care
The Deputy Minister of the Department of Seniors and Long-term Care provides direction and leadership on policy development, oversees the implementation of the department’s mandate and monitors the ongoing performance improvement of departmental operations.
Responsibilities include:
- overseeing day-to-day operations of the department
- leading the development of policy that recognizes and encourages the contributions of seniors
- building relationships with stakeholder groups
- providing a voice for our aging population within government
- representing the department within the community
