Quality assurance program: regulated health professions
The Quality Assurance Program for Regulator Performance provides an assessment of health regulators across a set of standards of good governance.
The Regulated Health Professions Act became law in November 2023. Professions are being migrated to the act through the creation of profession-specific regulations. All regulators will be migrated to the act.
As outlined in the Regulated Health Professions Act and in the Regulated Health Professions General Regulations, the Department of Health and Wellness has developed a regulator Quality Assurance Program for Regulator Performance. This supports Action for Health’s commitment to improved standards, transparency, accountability, and public reporting across the health system.
The Quality Assurance Program for Regulator Performance is an assessment of Nova Scotia’s health regulators across a set of standards of good governance. These standards were established by a working group of representatives from Department of Health and Wellness and the Regulated Health Professions Network.
Standards
The standards are grouped into the following domains:
- general
- governance
- standards (including policies and guidelines)
- investigations, professional conduct and fitness to practice
- information management
- suitability to practice and continuing competence
- education
- measurement, reporting and improvement
The Quality Assurance Program for Regulator Performance reporting tool will review each standard and its expected outcomes. Regulators will need to provide evidence showing they meet these outcomes.
