Peter Hackett
Peter Hackett was appointed Deputy Minister of the Department of Public Works in August 2021.
Biography
Peter has worked with several companies in the private and public sector in Vancouver, Toronto and Nova Scotia. He joined the Government of Nova Scotia in 1999, where he worked with the Department of Transportation and Public Works as a project manager.
Peter’s a member of Engineers Nova Scotia. He has mentored engineers-in-training throughout his career. Peter holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of New Brunswick.

Deputy Minister, Department of Public Works
The Deputy Minister of the Department of Public Works provides direction and leadership on policy development. They oversee day-to-day operations for the department. The deputy minister also monitors the ongoing performance improvement of departmental operations.
Responsibilities Include:
- overseeing day-to-day operations of the department
- implementing the department’s mandate and making sure the department meets its goals
- providing advice and recommendations to the minister
- overseeing corporate policy, planning and services
- providing leadership to the department’s senior team
