What we do

The Department of Seniors and Long-term Care supports the social and economic wellbeing of older adults. We oversee long-term care facilities and homecare agencies throughout the province. We also provide leadership and policy coordination across government to help improve the quality of care for seniors.

Responsibilities

We're responsible for:

  • setting policy direction, priorities and standards for long-term care
  • funding and overseeing all licensed long-term care facilities and government funded homecare agencies
  • making sure long-term care facilities and homecare agencies have the support and staffing they need to provide the necessary level of care
  • working with partners to help protect older adults from abuse and other mistreatment through the Adult Protection Act
  • conducting research to help meet future needs of the aging population
  • working with partners in healthcare, long-term care, other levels of government and other provincial governments to share best practices and innovation that help older adults maintain and improve their health

Who we are

The Department of Seniors and Long-term Care has about 120 staff in Halifax.

Our priorities are:

  • working with partners to help make sure care is available when seniors need it
  • promoting healthy, active living among older adults
  • supporting seniors so they can stay in their homes and communities longer
