Tenant’s Notice to Quit: Early Termination of Tenancy by Personal Representative (Form I)

A tenant’s personal representative uses Form I to end a tenancy (lease) early if the only tenant living in a rental unit dies.

By law, you must give the landlord Notice to Quit at least 1 month before you’d like to end the tenancy (lease). You can personally deliver the form or send it by registered mail.

Before you start

Make sure you have:

  • landlord’s name
  • address of rental unit
  • full name of deceased tenant

Who can use this form

A personal representative of the deceased tenant can use this form to end a tenancy (lease) early if the only tenant in a rental unit dies. You must give the form to the landlord at least 1 month before you’d like to end the tenancy (lease).

What you need to do

  1. Complete the form.
  2. Personally deliver the completed form to the deceased tenant’s landlord or send it by registered mail.
  3. Remove the deceased tenant’s belongings from the unit and inspect unit with the landlord before the tenancy (lease) end date.
