Change the name of your sole proprietorship

A sole proprietorship can change its name by filing the Change of Business Name Form with Registry of Joint Stock Companies.

What you need to do

  1. Reserve a new name for your sole proprietorship (Registry of Joint Stock Companies needs to approve name).
  2. Complete the form.
  3. Include payment with your form.
  4. Send your completed form and payment by mail. Or visit Registry of Joint Stock Companies or Access Nova Scotia.
  5. Registry of Joint Stock Companies sends you a Certificate of Name Change.

How long it takes

It should take 1 to 2 weeks to get your Certificate of Name Change. It can take longer if more information is needed or if your form hasn’t been filled in correctly.
